Breathing

Nasal breathing is a foundational tool for improving nervous system regulation, posture, and overall health. In my practice, I integrate Postural Restoration, Buteyko breathing, and Qigong to help restore efficient breathing patterns and support lasting healing.

Many people unknowingly develop dysfunctional breathing habits — including mouth breathing and over-breathing — which can contribute to chronic pain, fatigue, anxiety, and poor sleep.

By retraining the breath, we can directly influence how the body moves, heals, and regulates itself.

Why Nasal Breathing Matters

Nasal breathing supports optimal physiology in ways mouth breathing cannot. It helps:

  • Improve oxygen delivery through better carbon dioxide (CO₂) balance

  • Activate nitric oxide production for circulation and immune support

  • Enhance diaphragm function and core stability

  • Calm the nervous system and reduce stress reactivity

  • Support better sleep and energy levels

Chronic mouth breathing or over-breathing patterns are often linked to chronic pain, fatigue syndromes, and nervous system dysregulation.

What Is the Buteyko Method?

The Buteyko Breathing Method is a science-based approach that focuses on:

  • Nasal breathing

  • Reduced breathing volume

  • Improving CO₂ tolerance

  • Restoring efficient oxygen use

Instead of encouraging deep or forceful breathing, Buteyko retrains the body to breathe more quietly and efficiently — which helps regulate the autonomic nervous system and reduce symptoms of over-breathing.

How I Use Breathing in Physical Therapy

I integrate breathing retraining into every aspect of care. This includes:

  • Postural Restoration & Alignment
Breathing mechanics influence ribcage position, spinal alignment, and muscle function.

  • Chronic Pain & Pain Reprocessing
Efficient breathing reduces protective tension and supports a safer internal environment for recovery.

  • Fatigue & Long COVID Support
Improving CO₂ tolerance and breathing efficiency can help reduce breathlessness and improve energy regulation.

  • Movement & Stability Training
Breath coordinates movement, improving strength, timing, and resilience.

Qigong and Breath Awareness

Qigong complements this work by integrating breath with mindful movement and awareness. Through Qigong, you will:

  • Develop awareness of your breathing patterns

  • Encourage smooth, nasal breathing without force

  • Support the flow of Qi (energy) and emotional balance

  • Build a felt sense of calm and grounded presence

This combination of Postural Restoration, Buteyko breathing, and Qigong creates a comprehensive, whole-body approach to healing.

Conditions Supported

This approach may benefit individuals experiencing:

  • Chronic pain

  • Fatigue and burnout

  • Long COVID symptoms

  • Anxiety and nervous system dysregulation

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Postural dysfunction

  • Clenching and Grinding (Bruxism)

  • Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome

  • Sleep Apnea

  • Pediatric sleep-disordered breathing
